Resurrection in the Garden
by Ric Kasini Kadour
8”x10”; collage; 2017

Ruskin painted The Garden of San Miniato near Florence while on his first tour of Europe without his parents. Jan Brueghel the Younger (Flemish, 1601–1678) painted A Basket of Flowers in the 1620s after his father died and the younger artist took over his father’s studio. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which owns the painting, writes, “Various insects and fallen flowers support a conventional vanitas theme which is relieved by the butterfly, a symbol of the soul and the Resurrection.”
