The Dignity of Labour

Abbeville, in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, was one of Ruskin’s first stops on his 1968 tour of Europe. As Ruskin drawings go, St. Wulfran, Abbeville, Seen from the River is fairly complete. And yet, his writing at the time was more concerned with social issues: the problems of industrial capitalism and the dignity of labour. The Flemish-born Ambrosius Bosschaert largely established the Dutch tradition of flower painting.
