Abbeville, in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, was one of Ruskin’s first stops on his 1968 tour of Europe. And yet, his writing at the time was more concerned with social issues: the problems of industrial capitalism and the dignity of labour. The Flemish-born Ambrosius Bosschaert largely established the Dutch tradition of flower painting.
